Creating Change Through Art
It’s probably clear that we love asking big questions, including big questions about art and beauty. There’s something about asking these big questions that tends to move the needle on the way we think. We’re thrilled to be part of “Exclusively Inclusive”, a public art exhibit that calls into question racism and other hate.
Created by Arts Milton, this exhibit features the work of 10 different artists, each of whom share their experiences with being made to feel like a “them” instead of an “us”. Their work is installed on 10 traffic boxes in local intersections, but also appears online and in a gallery setting. Individually and collectively, these pieces are intended to create dialogue with thinkers of all ages, and sparks questions like:
What is it like to feel excluded, or even be harmed because we are seen to be different in some way?
Who makes up our community? Do we know enough about the people and groups with whom we share it? How do we get to know and understand each other better?
How can art bring about positive change?
To accompany these 10 works of art, we’ve created a series of activities and lesson plans for a variety of different age groups. These can be used at home or at school, and are intended to help audiences explore the exhibit, and to generate conversation. There’s nothing more important that examining the ways in which we relate to one another, and we hope this project brings positive change to our community and beyond.
