Monsters, Candy, and Big Questions!
T’is the season of spooky, and the perfect opportunity to try some wonderful, big questions with a little thinker! While you’re decorating the front yard, putting the finishing touches on costumes, and planning your route for trick or treating, give one of these Halloween-themed activities a try.
· Sort through a pile of mixed candy together and separate the delicious ones from the not-so delicious ones. Try to explain why some of them are delicious, and some of them aren’t. Is everyone going to agree on which candy goes in which pile? Is deliciousness something that’s in the candy itself, or just in the mind of the person eating it?
· Watch a favourite monster movie together or read a monster-related story. What makes the monster in it a monster? Is it possible for monsters to be cute and friendly? Make a list of traits that someone or something needs to have in order to be a monster.
· While putting on costumes, ask your kiddo if they’re still the same person while dressed up, or if something important about them changes. Does looking different make you different?
As always, let your child go first, and really listen to what they have to say (it might be a lot, especially after sampling candy). Make sure everyone in the discussion explains why they think the way they do.
Find a pile of think-y paper crafts on our free resource page too, including dress-up paper dolls and a cootie catcher!
Happy Halloween, and happy thinking!
