Thinking About Thinking, With Little Thinkers

It seems like such a big, complicated topic, because it is. Thinking about how, when, where, what and even why we think is one of the more complex things we can ponder. It’s also one of the most important, and yes, it is doable with kid thinkers too.

Thinking about thinking is important because:

·      It helps us understand ourselves as unique and wonderful thinkers

·      It helps us understand how we are connected to other thinkers (maybe even non-human ones), and the ideas we share.

·      It allows us to catch mistakes we make in logic and reason, such as being biased or overlooking information.

Believe it or not, thinking about thinking isn’t always seen as work, or even difficult. Your young thinker will probably revel in the opportunity to go beneath the surface, and dare we say it, might even have a little fun with it.

Here are some big questions to get you started:

·      Is it possible to think about nothing at all? Have you ever tried?

·      Do other people think the same things we do? How can we be sure? If we all think differently, then how can we share ideas?

·      Do you think animals and plants some of the same things that humans do? How can you tell?

·      Do you think differently now than you did when you were smaller? If so, what has changed?

·      Can you make mistakes while thinking? If so, what can you do to correct them?

·      Have people always thought the way they do today? What can change the way people think?

As always, it’s important to make sure everyone gets a turn to share their ideas, and that they avoid saying things like “just because” or “everyone says so” or “it’s always been this way”. Listen with an open mind and make them feel like they are valuable additions to this very important conversation.

Happy thinking (about thinking)!
